The Wye.
This is the old disused railway bridge over the wye at Foy, nr ross-on-wye. Anice little picnic spot with carpark and benches, also lovely views. A Haven for Mute Swans, as on this bend there are an average of 50 swans. Sadly this year due to the late floods alot of birds lost their nests and young. On the day i visited not one signet to be seen. I did see reed bunting, Mistle thrush, chiff chaff, willow warbler, robin, jay, buzzard, mallard.
Bee Orchids.
These lovely Bee Orchids are growing around Monkton Earthworks Pond. Some years they can be abundant and then another year there may be none at all. These curiuos flowers appear to have a bee sat on them but this is just a lure. The male bee's then come along and once they've had a good fumble about and picked up all the pollen from the flowers they fly off onto another flower then that one is pollenated, clever nature hey. july 06.
